This text deals with three specific competition law topics: selective distribution; exclusive distribution; and purchasing power. It is contributed to by a group of European Commission officials, representatives for national competition authorities and judges from across Europe. The views expressed have been given official sanction from the European Commission and offer an insight into the current workings of this area of competition. On selective distribution, the book looks at questions such as whether the interpretation of a selective distribution network given by the European courts and the Commission is too strict or lenient and whether it is capable of taking account of new technologies. in looking at exclusive distribution, the commentators address one vital question: in vertical relations, do exclusivity arrangements dealing with distribution and exclusivity arrangements dealing with purchasing for resale restrict competition? Finally, looking at purchasing power, the commentators discuss whether suppliers are too economically and commerically reliant on the large distribution groups.

Claus Dieter Ehlermann is Professor for Economic Law at the European University Institute in Florence, and a Member of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization in Geneva. In 1961 he joined the Legal Service of the European Commission, where he was Director-General from 1977 to 1987. He served as Spokesman of the Commission from 1987 to 1990, and then as Director-General of the Directorate-General for Competition from 1990 to 1995. He has lectured at the College of Europe in Bruges, at the Free University of Brussels and at the University of Hamburg, where he became Honorary Professor in 1983. His publications focus on European Community law and in particular on institutional and competition law issues. One of his other main areas of interest is deregulation. Laraine L. Laudati is an attorney who has worked extensively as a consultant to the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission, where she was a member of the team which prepared the Green Paper on vertical restraints. She has practised law in Washington DC and is currently completing a PhD thesis at the European University Institute in Florence. She is a specialist in EC competition law and has published numerous studies and articles in this area.
