Chromatography and all the related separation techniques are experimental in their origin and justification. However, the spectacular progress made in this area since World War II has given rise to a theoretical underpinning. The present book covers the current status of the research area and places it in perspective with the general concepts of the fields of physical chemistry involved. The ASI lecturers/authors - well known leaders in their fields - have written presentations at the graduate level, accessible to all those who have a good general background in the thermodynamics and mass transfer theory of phase equilibria. The book should be useful to young scientists and engineers who wish to access the current frontiers in chromatography and other separation sciences.
The ideal model of chromatography - the equilibrium-dispersive model of chromatography; review of the various models of linear chromatography, and their solutions; theory of zonoids: I) a mathematical summary; theory of zonoids: II) application to chromatographic processes; stochastic theory of chromatography; the characteristic function method and the approximation of chromatographic peak shape; applications of a mechanism-independent retention equation-system peaks; principles of adsorption at solid surfaces and their significance in gas/solid and liquid/solid chromatography; unified approach to the theory of chromatography I) "Incompressible", binary model phase (liquid chromatography); unified approach to the theory of chromatography II) compressible, neat mobile phase (supercritical fluid chromatography); the position of supercritical-fluid chromatography between gas and liquid chromatography from a kinetic point of view; physicochemical measurement by chromatography - overview and solution thermodynamics; physicochemical measurements by chromatography - diffusion and rate processes; gas chromatographic techniques to elucidate the working mechanism of graphitized carbon black-liquid modifier-eluate interactions; mechanisms of the separation and transport of polymer systems in chromatographic media; physico-chemical basis of hydrophobic interaction chromatography; theoretical aspects of quantitative affinity chromatography; theoretical basis of field-flow fractionation; conventional isoelectric focusing and immobilized pH gradients; solute band spreading in capillary electrophoresis.
