Explores sustainable means of soil improvement through the promising use of nano-biochar and nanoparticles for improving soil quality, as well as for reducing waste. Discusses how nano-biochar can improve soil quality and sustainability and explores the various types of nanoparticles and approaches for improving soil health.
Crop loss and insufficient yield are two important issues faced by farmers. A major cause of both of these issues is unhealthy soil. Various technological means have been tested and used for purifying soil and making it healthy. However, they are expensive and often unfriendly to the environment. This new book, Nano-Biochar and Nanoparticles for Soil Health Improvement, explores sustainable means of soil improvement through the promising use of nano-biochar and nanoparticles for improving soil quality, as well as for reducing waste. Nano-biochar application improves soil properties, increasing the suitability of the soil for microbial growth activities.

The book explores approaches for soil health improvement, focusing primarily on nano-sized biochar and various metal-based nanoparticles, which may have a direct influence on soil microbial functionality, soil biota, and soil physiochemical properties. The book discusses how nano-biochar can improve soil quality and sustainability and explores the various types of nanoparticles and approaches for improving soil health. Chapters present research on how nanoparticles and nano-biochar can reduce salinity stress, improve soil physiochemical properties, and improve intrinsic soil characteristics. The book also explores the unique soil-microbe interaction and provides insight into nanoparticles and nano-biochar as a means of this interaction.

This new book is a pioneer for its discussion of the role of nanoparticles in improving soil quality and reducing soil toxicity and stress. It will be a valuable addition to the scientific community to consider new technological developments to improve soil health.

Vishnu D. Rajput, PhD, is a Leading Researcher (Associate Professor) and Head of International Laboratory of Nanobiotechnology at Southern Federal University. His ongoing research is based on the toxic effects of bulk- and nano-forms of metals and bioaccumulation; bio/geo-transformations, uptake, translocation, and toxic effects on plant physiology; morphology, anatomy, ultrastructure of cellular and subcellular organelles; cytomorphometric modifications; and DNA. He is also researching possible remediation approaches such as using biochar/nano-biochar-based sorbents and nanotechnological approaches. He is an internationally recognized reviewer, having reviewed over 200 manuscripts, and has received several outstanding reviewer certificates from Elsevier, Springer, and others. He is an editorial board member of various high-impact journals. He is a leader of several grants including Mega-Grant and BRICS, and he is principal investigator/co-PI of over 21 national and international projects. Dr. Rajput has received several certificates of appreciation from Southern Federal University for outstanding contribution in academic, creative research, and publication activities. He has also received Highly Qualified Specialist status from the Russian government Tatiana Minkina, PhD, is the Head of Soil Science and Land Evaluation Department of Southern Federal University, Russia. She is also the Head of the International Master’s Degree Educational Program ""Management and Estimation of Land Resources"" (2015–2022 years, accreditation by ACQUIN). Her area of scientific interest is soil science, biogeochemistry of trace elements, environmental soil chemistry, soil monitoring and assessment, and modeling and remediation using physicochemical treatment methods. Dr. Minkina was awarded in 2015 with a Diploma of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for her many years of work for the development and improvement of the educational process and for her significant contribution to the training of highly qualified specialists. Currently, she is handling projects funded by the Russian Scientific Foundation, Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, and the Russian Foundation of Basic Research. She is a member of many professional societies. She has published over 750 papers (389 in English).
