Presents the story of Mars, its place in the solar system, its structure, surface, mountains, volcanoes, impact craters, ice-caps, atmosphere, and weather. This book explores the possibility of life on Mars, past or present, and shows that even after centuries of research and speculation, our acquaintance with Mars is only just beginning.
In this revised edition, Patrick Moore, familiar and undisputed expert on the stars and planets, tells the full story of Mars revealed, from the early myths to the present day. This is Mars as it really is: its place in the solar system, its structure, surface, mountains, volcanoes, impact craters, ice-caps, atmosphere, weather. Everything we currently know about Mars is chronicled in a detailed, fascinating, well-illustrated text. Patrick Moore orbits through an ever more exciting story of scientific discovery in his unique, enthusiastic style. The possibility of life on Mars, past or present, is carefully explored in the light of the latest evidence. Looking to the future of Martian exploration, Patrick Moore shows that even after centuries of astronomical research and speculation, our acquaintance with Mars is only just beginning.

Sir Patrick Moore CBE FRS, Britain's best known astronomer, has over 50 years attracted and held a vast audience through his books and television appearances. He has presented every edition of The Sky at Night since it was first broadcast in April 1957, a world record for television, and to universal acclaim won a Lifetime Achievement Award for his services to television at the 2001 BAFTA Awards, presented to him by the astronaut Buzz Aldrin. He is a Fellow and Past President of the Royal Astronomical Society, was awarded the CBE in 1988 and his knighthood in 2000. An enthusiastic communicator, he has done more to popularise the study of astronomy than any other writer of his or subsequent generations.
