The oil and gas industry is in the midst of a paradigm shift, moving from developing solely petroleum-based energy to producing alternative energy forms, including renewables. Energy Transition in the Oil and Gas Industry offers a comprehensive overview of renewables and their applications in the oil and gas industry during the current energy transition period. It includes the latest methods and workflows in renewables and oil and gas processes as well as integrated and hybrid approaches currently used as the industry begins its transition to the production of alternative forms of energy.
• Provides a synopsis of fossil fuel resources, along with the latest technologies, applications, and economics, and offers a general outline for the energy transition
• Details various alternative and renewable energy forms and discusses their advantages, disadvantages, maturity levels, and applications, including solar, geothermal, wind, hydropower, fuel cells, hydrogen, biofuels, ocean energy, and nuclear
• Discusses carbon capture and storage, electric vehicles, and energy storage technologies
• Covers the latest advances and technologies related to digital transformation in the oil and gas industry
• Summarizes future trends and directions of technologies related to renewable energy and energy transition in the oil and gas industry
Addressing energy holistically from a technology and engineering perspective, this book offers engineering professionals in the energy sector a wide-ranging view of current and near future changes taking place in this critical industry.
Cenk Temizel is a seasoned reservoir engineer boasting nearly two decades of extensive experience in reservoir simulation, smart fields, optimization, unconventional resources, field development, and enhanced oil recovery. His career has spanned roles at industry giants such as Saudi Aramco, Schlumberger and Halliburton across the Middle East, the United States, and the UK, and a notable tenure as a reservoir engineer at Aera Energy LLC (a Shell–ExxonMobil affiliate) in Bakersfield, California, USA. Prior to his industry roles, he contributed as a teaching and research assistant at the University of Southern California and Stanford University. Throughout his career, Cenk has garnered numerous accolades, including the SPE 2022 Regional Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award. He secured second place at the SPE Global R&D Competition at SPE ATCE 2014 in Amsterdam and the Technical Excellence Awards at the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in 2017 in Istanbul. In 2012, he received the Halliburton Applause Award for Innovation. He is also a holder of several US patents and has a portfolio of publications in areas of reservoir engineering, enhanced oil recovery processes, machine learning, and smart fields. Cenk holds a BS degree (honors) from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara (2003), and an MS degree (2005) from the University of Southern California (USC), both in petroleum engineering. A committed member of SPE since 2000, he has actively contributed to several program committees. Ali Başer is the managing partner of Flux Energy Solutions, a firm focused on bringing coupled AI solutions to oil, gas, and geothermal firms. Having hands-on experience in both drilling and reservoir engineering aspects of the industry, he worked as an advisor to major geothermal energy companies in Türkiye, specializing in reservoir modeling, production, and injection optimization. Previously, he worked as a programmer for various firms, creating video games, desktop applications, and web applications. His research interests include machine learning-assisted reservoir engineering methods, time series analysis of production dynamics, and the usage of “serious games” as a training medium in the oil and gas industry. He holds a B.Sc. in petroleum and natural gas engineering from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, and an M.Sc. in computer engineering from Başkent University, Ankara. Onder Saracoglu is the managing partner at Flux Energy Solutions. He has 27 years of experience working on reservoir simulation, reservoir management, field development, and reservoir engineering studies with NOC, service companies, and international E&P companies in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa. He has published numerous publications in reservoir and geothermal engineering. He holds a BS (1996) and MS (1999) degrees from the Middle East Technical University in petroleum and natural gas engineering, Ankara, Türkiye. Tolga Tural received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, 1991 an M.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma, 1995 and MBA in finance and investment management from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC , 2017. Earlier in his career, Mr. Tural specialized in semiconductors specifically integrated circuit design and development design and development engineering roles for both networking and wireless communication applications in both Canada and the US. Later in his career, he focused in renewable industry to develop renewable projects as well as to build commercial and large scale power plants for power utilities and oil & gas industry. Mr. Tural has 28 years of diversified experience in semiconductors, wireless and data communications, power utilities and oil and gas industries. Mr. Tural is currently working at Saudi Aramco New Energies Strategy & Marketing Consultant. His current role is leading decarbonization development with renewables including project development, portfolio transaction and technology validation. Mr.Tural currently holds several technical publications and patents. Luigi Saputelli is a reservoir engineering expert advisor with 34 years of experience as reservoir, drilling and production engineer in PDVSA, ADNOC, Hess and Halliburton. Saputelli is a researcher, lecturer, and active volunteer in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) where he served as JPT editor (2012-2020), Production and Operations Advisory Board since 2010, founding member of Real-time Optimization Interest Group and Petroleum Data-driven Analytics technical sections since 2003. He is the recipient of the 2015 SPE International Production and Operations Award. He has published more than 100 industry papers, 6 patents and contributed with over 5 books on digital oilfields, reservoir management and real-time production optimization. He holds a BSc in electronic engineering from Universidad Simon Bolivar (1990), with a MSc in petroleum engineering from Imperial College (1996), and a PhD in chemical engineering from University of Houston (2003).
