Photonics: An Electromagnetic Approach introduces students to the field by means of a comprehensive integration of diverse explanations within a unified framework rooted in electromagnetic theory. This framework is designed to meet the needs of undergraduate (junior or senior) and graduate students, while also providing researchers with a moderately detailed description. The book strives to cover underlying physical photonics principles rather than focusing on actual devices and systems. It starts with the underlying physics in Maxwell’s equations. Many important features in photonics are covered as solutions of linear Maxwell’s equations, including reflection, refraction, interference, radiation, diffraction, optical waveguide, optical resonator, etc. Ray optics are introduced by considering the dimensionality of the interesting region. Resonant interactions between electromagnetic fields and media, including semiconductors, are explained classically or semi classically. Various dynamic characteristics of a laser are also discussed. Noise mechanisms in the detection and generation processes of optical radiation are also explained in detail. Fundamentals for nonlinear optical phenomena are explained by solving nonlinear wave equations both for elastic and inelastic nonlinearities.

Chang-Hee Lee received his B.S. degree in electronics engineering from Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, in 1983 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from KAIST in 1985 and 1989, respectively. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Bellcore in Red Bank, US, from 1989 to 1990, and worked as a senior researcher at ETRI, Daejeon, Korea, from 1990 to 1997. He has been a professor in KAIST since 1997. He served as the Dean of Research Affairs of KAIST from 2010 to 2011. He also served as the Head of the School of Electrical Engineering at KAIST from 2013 to 2016. He served as co-dean of the LIC (Liangjiang International College) established by cooperation between KAIST and CQUT (Chongqing University of Technology) in China from 2017 to 2020. For industry experience, he was CTO of Novera Optics Korea Inc. from 2001 to 2008. He had spent over 30 years in the area of optical communications, including semiconductor lasers. He received the HaeRim Photonics Technology Award in 2013. He is the author of more than 250 international journal and conference papers. He is also the inventor of 35 patents issued in the US. His current research interests are LiDAR, semiconductor lasers, optical access networks, and optical wireless communications. He is a fellow of IEEE.
