Spurred by developments and advances in epidemiology, genetics, haemoglobin research and treatment, the knowledge of sickle cell anaemia has increased greatly. Since both scientific and clinical aspects are prominent in research, this book is divided into those two main sections. The basic science examines the H6S gene and all of the changes in denaturation, membranes, anion transport and haemodynamics produced by the mutation. The clinical section describes: the presentation of the disease; its complications in the organ systems; the handling of the various crises; pain (painful bowel, for example), aplastic (marrow stops producing cells) and sequestration; recommended therapies; counselling and health maintenance; and a look at unconventional and experimental approaches. Pathophysiology, as it is known, is described with each complication.

Basic Aspects; Clinical Aspects.
