Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry: Advanced Technologies in Wastewater Treatment provides an overview of current techniques, processes, and strategies in the field of wastewater management dealing either with the recovery of co-products, biomolecules or simply water recovery and purification. The book highlights the latest developments in different areas of agro-food productions. It focuses on innovative technologies and control strategies in the treatment of wastewaters derived from different industries including dairy, seafood processing plants, olive oil manufacturing factories, fruit juice and beverage, wine and beer and various other food processing facilities. The book features technologies and processes ranging from adsorption-assisted technologies, advances oxidation processes, hydrodynamic cavitation, pressure-driven membrane technologies, algae-based treatment, membrane bioreactors, engineered composite materials-based treatment, photocatalysis-based treatment, to ultrasound-assisted electrochemical processes.

Roberto Castro-Muñoz, a Food engineer and two PhD’s in Biotechnology and EUDIME Membrane Engineering, is a Research Professor at Tecnologico de Monterrey Mexico since 2019. He has experience in membrane science and technology with expertise in pressure-driven membrane processes, pervaporation, gas separation, membrane distillation and the synthesis of composite membranes for selective gas and solvent separations. Roberto focuses on the application of such processes in different fields such as food processing, chemical and biochemical processes, environment and biotechnology. Angelo Basile, a Chemical Engineer, is a senior Researcher at the ITM-CNR, University of Calabria, where he is responsible for research related to both the ultra-pure hydrogen production and CO2 capture using Pd-based Membrane Reactors. Angelo Basile's h-index is 53, with 387 document results with a total of 8,910 citations in 5,034 documents (www.scopus.com – 24 May 2023). He has more than 170 scientific papers in peer-to-peer journals and 252 papers in international congresses; and is a reviewer for 165 int. journals, an editor/author of more than 50 scientific books and 120 chapters on international books on membrane science and technology; 6 Italian patents, 2 European patents and 5 worldwide patents. He is referee of 104 international scientific journals and Member of the Editorial Board of 22 of them. Basile is also Editor associate of the Int. J. Hydrogen Energy and Editor-in-chief of the Int. J. Membrane Science & Technol. and Editor-in-chief of Membrane Processes (Applications), a section of the Intl J. Membranes. Basile also prepared 42 special issues on membrane science and technology for many international journals (IJHE, Chem Eng. J., Cat. Today, etc.). He participated to and was/is responsible of many national and international projects on membrane reactors and membrane science. Basile served as Director of the ITM-CNR during the period Dec. 2008 – May 2009. In the last years, he was tutor of 30 Thesis for master and Ph.D. students at the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Calabria (Italy). From 2014, Basile is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering Processes. Alfredo Cassano, a Biologist, is senior Researcher at ITM-CNR since 2000. He has a long experience in the field of membrane science and technology with research expertise including pressure-driven membrane processes, membrane contactors and integrated membrane operations mainly applied to wastewater treatments and agro-food productions. Cassano also prepared 4 special issues on membrane science and technology for 3 international journals (Membranes, Foods and Journal of Membrane Science and Research). He is involved as scientific responsible or main investigator in different national projects with both Italian Ministry of Education, University & Research and private companies and international projects funded by EU. He has been tutoring of 28 Thesis for master and Ph.D. students at ITM-CNR.
