Conserving Migratory Species: An Interdisciplinary Synthesis fills an important gap in biodiversity conservation literature by providing the first synthesis exclusively and explicitly dedicated to the conservation of migratory species. This book spans ecological and environmental management to sociology and international relations. Written by an international team of carefully assembled experts, this book is organized into key cross-cutting themes relating to migratory species conservation through an integrative approach across animal groups with a global scope. Migratory species have supported human survival for millennia, yet their future is in question due to human pressures. These include species that challenge our imagination through their amazing long-distance journeys, such as the bar-tailed godwit that flies from Alaska to New Zealand, as well as many that have contributed to human survival and economic activities, such as salmons that have underpinned the lives of Native Americans and the fishing industry in the North Pacific. This book explores the diversity of migratory animals, their importance to humans, their status, and threats, as well as what we can do to conserve them through on-ground actions orchestrated by governance approaches at various scales. Conserving Migratory Species: An Interdisciplinary Synthesis is an important resource for biodiversity and conservation researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and citizens around the world who endeavor to advance migratory species and their marvelous journeys.

Dr. Richard Fuller is a Professor at the University of Queensland, Australia. He has worked on the ecology and conservation of migratory species for over 20 years, publishing more than 100 scientific papers on the subject. With a strong foundation of work on migratory birds in the Asia-Pacific, he also has a growing interest in insect migration. Dr. Fuller has a very strong network of collaborators around the world, and for example recently chaired a conference on migratory shorebirds attended by 500 people. Dr. Eduardo Gallo-Cajiao is a recent David H. Smith Conservation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle. His research primarily focuses on understanding the governance dimensions of migratory species conservation drawing on ecology and political science. Under this theme, he has conducted research with a focus on all migratory birds in the Americas, seabirds in the Tropical Pacific and Australia, as well as on shorebirds in the Asia-Pacific and beyond. Additionally, he has track record of strong science communication skills as demonstrated by his tenure as Vice-President of Education and Outreach of the Society for Conservation Biology, which will be an asset to ensure the book reaches a broad audience. Dr. Autumn-Lynn Harrison is a Research Ecologist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, part of the National Zoological Park and Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C. USA. She has studied animal migration in many systems, including land mammals of the East African savannah, marine predators in the Pacific Ocean, and now birds of the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Harrison’s experience with edited volumes will be a strong contribution—she was the editorial assistant for the volume, Connectivity Conservation (Cambridge University Press) and is an editor of the forthcoming Atlas of Migratory Connectivity for the Birds of North America (Princeton University Press, 2022). Her work aims also to translate discoveries from animal tracking technologies into conservation and management. She worked for the Society for Conservation Biology for 11 years and has been a leader of multiple animal migration conservation initiatives.
