This was the first COSPAR symposium devoted to Relativistic Gravitation. Activity in testing Relativistic Gravitation has increased considerably in the past two decades with the rapid growth of technical capabilities. The development of space-worthy laser, gyroscopes, atomic clocks, cryogenic equipment and low noise microwave receivers combined with highly sophisticated deep space technology and communication systems allow precision tests of relativity and gravitation and this technological progress is described within this publication.

Section headings and selected papers: Technology. Engineering technology for physics experiments in space, D B DeBra & B W Parki;son. Ultra stable clocks for use in space, E M Mattison. Clocks and spaceborne tests of relativistic gravitation, R F C Vessot. Experiments. Tests of general reliability in earth orbit using a superconductivity gravity gradiometer, H J Paik. Relativity in space astrometry projects, F Mignard & J Kovalev;ky. Investigating relativity using lunar laser ranging: geodetic precession and the Nordtvedt effect, J O Dickey et al . Gravitational Waves. Search of gravitational waves with resonant detectors, G Pizzella. Cosmic background gravitational wave radiation and prospects for its detection, A J Anderson. An antenna for laser gravitational-wave observations in space, J E Faller et al . Theory. On the black hole lens and its foci, V R Eshleman et al . Testing local Lorentz invariance using laboratory and space technology, M P Haugan & C M Will.;Quantum limitations in gravitational space experiments, V B Braginsky. Author Index.
