Laser-plasma interaction is a continuously growing field with a broad range of applications in fundamental science, industry, and medicine. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics of the interaction of intense laser pulses with high-temperature plasmas motivated by applications in high-energy-density physics and inertial confinement fusion. It combines the presentation of basic elements of the kinetics of charged particles in plasma and properties of electromagnetic waves with up-to-date developments related to nonlinear laser-plasma interactions, plasma heating, particle acceleration, excitation and mitigation of parametric instabilities. The book is based on the lectures taught by the author to students at master’s and graduate levels. It provides original material combining qualitative descriptions of physical processes with a strict but accessible theoretical background and practical exercises.

Vladimir Tikhonchuk is a professor emeritus at Bordeaux University, France, and a senior researcher at the Extreme Light Infrastructure ERIC, ELI-Beamlines Facility, Czech Republic. His research is in the domain of high-energy-density physics and nonlinear optics, including inertial confinement fusion and dynamic processes in laboratory astrophysics, laser-plasma interactions, excitation of parametric instabilities, generation of magnetic and electric fields, acceleration of charged particles, and energy transport. He obtained a PhD and Dr of Science degrees from the P. N. Lebedev Physics Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He is a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France, Edward Teller Awardee from the American Nuclear Society, Divisional Associate Editor for the Physical Review Letters, advisory board member of the MRE journal, and Board member of the Division of Plasma Physics of the European Physical Society. He has supervised more than 30 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and co-authored more than 500 peer-reviewed papers.
