He trained as a social anthropologist and sociologist in the UK and has held professorial positions in the UK, Europe and Australia. He has longstanding research and teaching interests in human-animal studies, posthumanism, new materialism, city life, creativity, art, mobilities, collecting, museum studies, festivals and arts ecologies. He has contributed to the opening up of several new fields within more-than-human studies, including the city, tourism, social and cultural bonds, place, the home, bush fires, the beach/sea, companion animals and human loneliness.
