This text presents the latest developments in the field of theoretical and experimental efforts to understand the nature of hadronic matter at high temperature and/or high baryon density produced in a laboratory or in the early universe and possibly existing in cosmological objects. It contains detailed results from the truly heavy ion experiments, for example, gold ions at the Brookhaven AGS and lead ions at the CERN SPS. Discussions on several promising signals for the formation of quark gluon plasma like dilepton and photon production, strangeness enhancement and disoriented chiral condensates also form part of this text. The book includes a description of the physics capabilities of future experiments and important theoretical results on lattice QCD, multiparticle production, strange matter and properties of hot hadronic matter, quark-hadron phase transition in the early universe, properties of strange stars and primordial nucleosynthesis.
