The dynamic behavior of pipelines describes the time-varying continuous response of these structures under extreme effects, that are generated by the surrounding environment (waves and sea currents) and motions imposed by the host floating facility. This book describes all known impacts that affect the behavior and operation of a pipeline conveying an inner flow for underwater applications. "Known Impacts" are those phenomena that are considered important according to practice and experience. Underwater pipelines are typical, unique structures that are attached to unique floating facilities. The design and utilization of underwater pipelines depend strongly on the installation site and the intended application's particulars. It is possible that future technology demands will require us to cope with additional challenges that will be considered important for the design and operation of underwater pipelines, leading inevitably to the enhancement of the "known challenges".

Dr.-Eng. Ioannis K. Chatjigeorgiou, is a Professor in the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (SNA&ME) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He graduated from SNA&ME in 1990 and was awarded his PhD in 1997. He joined the faculty of SNA&ME in 2001 and elected full Professor of NTUA in 2016. He teaches in both the Undergraduate and the Postgraduate programs of SNA&ME. His research interests include, linear and nonlinear hydrodynamics of floating structures, violent hydrodynamic slamming, hydroelasticity, wave-current interaction with structures, environmental loading on floating bodies, dynamics of slender structures, dynamics of pipes with internal flow, analysis and design of mooring systems, hydromechanic analysis of moored floaters and sustainable energy production systems from the sea environment. He worked as a Visiting Professor in NTNU (2016), Ecole Centrale Marseille (2008 & 2011) and University of East Anglia (2014-2016). He was awarded the Marie Curie Research Fellowship for outstanding researchers (2014) and for 2020-2022 is included in the list of the 2% of top researchers worldwide. He is member of several national and international professional and scientific societies, member of editorial boards in international journals, reviewer of papers in numerous peer review journals, reviewer for book publishers and evaluator of funded projects. He has an extended record of publications in scientific journals, international conference proceedings and collective volumes. He is the writer of the book "Analytical Methods in Marine Hydrodynamics" published by Cambridge University Press in 2018. He has participated in the execution of many funded research projects and was the Principal Investigator in several of them. He is currently the Director of the Laboratory of Floating Structures and Mooring Systems, while since Oct 2019, he serves as the Vice Rector of Research and Lifelong Education of NTUA, President of NTUA's Research Committee and President of the Center of Education and Lifelong Learning. Professor Chatjigeorgiou is an active researcher with continuous contributions widely recognized. This book is the second in his career and encompasses the main topics of his work on slender structure dynamics and dynamics of pipelines conveying fluids for marine applications.
