Managing Urban Rivers: From Planning to Practice captures the different facets of river management required for integrating rivers within the development landscape of cities in a sustainable manner. Sections cover the entire spectrum of urban river management, from planning to actual on-the-ground implementation, providing a one-stop destination for knowledge on urban river management. Edited by a team of four experts with practical experience in this domain, the different chapters of the book are authored by eminent scholars and practitioners with expertise in specific areas of urban river management.

Urban rivers and their management is a hot topic as governments across the world are focusing on this aspect, especially since it has direct implications for SDG target 6.6, which aims to “protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes”.

Victor R. Shinde has more than 17 years of experience as a scientist and technical expert (water and environment) in nine countries in Asia and Africa. His areas of expertise include urban river management, integrated water resources management, and water security enhancement. He has led the development of several national-level tools, framework, guidelines, and advisories for managing urban rivers. Rajiv Ranjan Mishra is a former Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga—an ambitious flagship by the Indian government with projects worth USD 3.73 billion. Uday Bhonde has more than 18 years of research and practical experience in urban lake management, water resilient cities, innovations in urban water and sanitation and hygiene, and urban flood resilience. He has developed several capacity building programs on sustainable urban water and sanitation management for the Ministry of Urban Development (India)and other international organizations. Hitesh Vaidya has more than 20 years of experience in the field of urban management, urban governance, and capacity building. He has been associated in the areas of urban development, urban governance, and urban infrastructure management with the UN, World Bank, and US Agency for International Development assignments.
