This report summarises a comparison between the European standard EN1539 and
the US standard NFPA86. It focuses on the safety related demands and especially
the measures on explosion protection.
The following aspects are explicitly compared:
the scope,
types and classes,
document structure,
general safety demands,
fire protection,
explosion protection,
heating,
control system,
calculating forced ventilation,
inertised dryers and ovens,
information for use.
The NFPA86 has a serious deficit. It uses data and calculations which do not
present the state of the scientific and technical knowledge. Safety characteristic data
are used which differ from assessed data from Chemsafe [13]. The correction of the
lower explosion level regarding the temperature uses the data published by Zabetakis
1965 [14], which is significantly to low as today’s knowledge shows.
Both standards have a lot of similarities but also distinct differences. The intersection
of both standards allows the description of a dryer or oven which satisfies
both standards. On the other hand it is not possible to combine the best of both
standards.
