Today, graduate and postgraduate courses in physics and applied mathematics all over the world include the study of general relativity, cosmology and alternative theories of gravitation as a compulsory subject. As such, this book focuses on topics like special and general theories of relativity, tensor calculus, Einstein’s field equations and cosmological models of the universe. It also provides a lucid introduction to alternative and new theories of gravitation, and discusses some cosmological models of these theories. It also includes several examples and exercises, making it an asset for every student and researcher of this great subject.

D. Radhakrishna Reddy is a retired Professor of Applied Mathematics at Andhra University, India. He has more than forty years of research and teaching experience, and has published more than 300 research papers on Einstein’s theory of relativity, alternative theories of gravitation, dark energy and cosmology. He served as Associate Editor of Astrophysics and Space Science, and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, London. He is also the author of a number of books and two textbooks. Y. Aditya is presently working as Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities at GMR Institute of Technology, India. He has eight years of teaching and research experience. He is actively engaged in research work and has published more than 50 research papers on Einstein’s theory of relativity, dark energy and modified theories of gravitation.
