This book is devoted to the 60th birthday of the Prof. Francesco dell'Isola, who is known for his long-term contribution in the field of multiscale materials. It contains several contributions from researchers in the field, covering theoretical analyses, computational aspects and experiments.

Dr Ivan Giorgio is an Italian Mechanician. He received his cum laude degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" Italy, in 2004. He got a Ph.D. degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2008 at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" Roma, Italy. He was a professor of Mechanics Applied to Machines at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", in Latina, Italy, for the period 2017-2019.  He is a tenure-track associate professor (RTDB) at the Dept. of Civil, Construction-Architectural and Environmental Engineering, University of L'Aquila, Italy. His main research activity is focused on Lagrangian Mechanics.

Prof. Luca Placidi is associate professor of solid and structural mechanics at the International Telematic University Uninettuno. He is also affiliated to the International Research Center on Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems (M&MoCS) and his research activities are related to Microstructured and Higher Gradient Continua, Damage and Fracture Mechanics, Metamaterials, Waves in complex systems, Nonlinear mechanics of structures, Ice and Impact mechanics.

Dr Emilio Barchiesi received his master's degree in Mathematical Engineering from the University of L'Aquila, completed his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the University of Rome La Sapienza, and has been a visiting researcher at the Institute of Mechanics, TU BERLIN. His research activities are focused on generalized continua and microstructured materials, especially homogenization procedures for obtaining the second gradient continua.

Dr Bilen Emek Abali is a member of ISIMM (The International Society for the Interaction of Mechanics and Mathematics) and IACM (International Association for Computational Mechanics). After studying and working at the universities in Istanbul, Munich, Berlin, Berkeley, and Ghent, he joined the faculty as professor at Uppsala University in Sweden. A rigorous scientific and teaching expertise he has obtained over the years as a consequence of working and lecturing in several continents. He holds a Habilitation in Germany and a Docent in Sweden. Among others, he has sponsored courses in mechanics, composite materials, numerical methods, and multiphysics simulations. His first research monograph has been published in Springer entitled as Computational Reality, presenting thermodynamical derivation of coupled phenomena involving thermomechanics with electromagnetism in solid bodies and fluids as well as their computation via the finite element method with the aid of open-source codes developed under the FEniCS project.

Prof. Dr.-Ing.habil. Dr.h.c.mult. Holm Altenbach is a Member of the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and the International Research Center on Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems (M&MoCS), Italy. He has held positions at the Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg and Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, both in Germany. He graduated from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1980(diploma in Dynamics and Strength of Machines) and was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1983 and his Doctor of Technical Sciences degree in 1987 at the same Institute. He is currently Full Professor of Engineering Mechanics at the Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Institute of Mechanics (since 2011), where he has been Acting Director since 2015. His areas of scientific interest include General theory of elastic and inelastic plates and shells, Creep and damage mechanics, Strength theories, and Nano- and micromechanics.
