Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is thought to be an incurable disease typified by a clonal disorder in the maturation and proliferation stage of multipotential hematopoietic stem cells. The three main themes in this book are: Influence of cytokines on the maturation and proliferation of normal hematopoietic progenitor cells as well as leukemic cells including those from patients with MDS. Synergisms of cytokines in vitro and in vivo. Clinical features of MDS including BMT. The book provides useful information regarding effective treatments of MDS based on a better understanding of the cytokine actions as well as the association with the hematopoiesis including the network system.

Effects of cytokines on hematopoietic progenitor cells and hematopoiesis. The targets and biological effects of G- and GM-CSF. The role of GM-CSF in spontaneous colony-formation of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia cells. The regulation of colony stimulating factor gene expression. Molecular analysis of the SCL and GM-CSF receptor genes in leukemia. Differentiation pathways of clone-sorted CD34-positive cells. Is LD78 a human counterpart of MIP-1# (stem cell inhibitor) ?. A novel acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line with negative proliferative effect by interleukin 3. Establishment of a IL-6-dependent plasma cell leukemia cell line. The role of megakaryoblasts derived transforming growth factor-beta in myelofibrosis. Colony stimulating factors: Regulation of production. Molecular mechanism of cross-inhibition of GM-CSF binding to KG-1 cells by IL-3. Suppression of clonogenicity of human leukemic cells by recombinant hemopoietic factors. Mechanism of synergy among hrG-GSF, hrGM-CSF and hrIL-3. Effect of cytokines on murine thrombocytopoiesis: A potent thrombopoietic activity of interleukin-6. Effects of in vivo administration of cytokine on the immune system and the hematopoiesis in murine allogeneic bone marrow chimeras. Double negative (CD4-, CD8-) TCRalphabeta+ adult T cell leukemic cells proliferated vigorously in the presence of IL-2 or IL-4. The cytotoxic effect of tumor necrosis factor against leukemic cells. Granulopoiesis in a MDS patient with monosomy 7: Probable deprivation of granulocytes not from G-CSF but I1-3 and GM-CSF dependent progenitors. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor cooperated with retinoic acid on the induction of differentiation of acute promyelocytic leukemia cells in vitro. Effects of G-CSF and GM-CSF on cytotoxic activity of cytosine arabinoside and daunorubicin in acute myeloid leukemia. The expression of human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor receptor and differentiation of acute myeloid leukemic cells. Possible pathophysiological roles of G-CSF in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS): A case report. Serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor levels in hematological malignancies. Synergistic effects of CSFs on the proliferation and differentiation of leukemia progenitor cells. Cytokine gene expression in acute leukemia. The inhibitory effect of interleukin 4 on the spontaneous growth of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia cells. Effect of recombinant cytokines and a protein produced by MC-1 cell line on murine megakaryocytopoiesis. Combined administration of recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor and recombinant human erythropoietin in a patient with refractory anemia. Effects of recombinant human interleukin 1 beta, recombinant human interleukin 2, and recombinant murine tumor necrosis factor alpha on the reconstitution of hematopoiesis and immune functions in lethally irradiated mice transplanted with synergeneic bone marrow cells.
