This volume highlights fungal associations, as they are found in mycorrhizas, lichens and other fungal symbioses. The emphasis is laid upon the molecular, biochemical and ultrastructural analysis of these interactions. Major progress has been achieved over the last few years by the systematic application of modern methods, developed mainly in molecular biology. The data are presented in high-quality illustrations, leading the reader from the subcellular to higher levels of organization where specific symbiotic traits become apparent. Early stages of symbiotic interactions are of special interest. They are compared to parasitic interrelations and also considered from an evolutionary standpoint.

MYCORRHIZAE: 1 Exploring the Genome of Glomalean Fungi.- 2 Molecular Approaches to Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Functioning.- 3 Immunochemical Characterization of Mycorrhizal Fungi.- 4 At the Interface Between Mycorrhizal Fungi and Plants: The Structural Organization of Cell Wall, Plasma Membrane and Cytoskeleton.- 5 Lipids of Mycorrhizae.- 6 Arbuscular Mycorrhiza - a Key Component of Sustainable Plant-Soil Ecosystems.- 7 Exchange of Carbohydrates Between Symbionts in Ectomycorrhiza.- FURTHER FUNGAL INTERACTIONS: 8 Piriformospora indica. An Axenically Culturable Mycorrhiza-Like Endosymbiotic Fungus.- 9 Geosiphon pyriforme, an Endocytosymbiosis Between Fungus and Cyanobacteria, and its Meaning as a Model System for Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Research.- LICHENES: 10 The Symbiotic Phenotype of Lichen-Forming Ascomycetes.- 11 Morphology and Phylogeny of Ascomycete Lichens.- 12 Basidiolichens.- FUNGAL BACTERIAL INTERACTIONS: 13 Fungal Bacterial Interactions
