This book provides the tools for understanding these complex systems and addresses the basic concepts of WECs through to detailed analysis and design.
Designing offshore wave energy converter (WEC) devices requires a thorough understanding of many aspects of science and engineering, namely, wave hydrodynamics, wave-WEC interactions, mechanical design, analysis tools, and conducting experiments. This book provides the tools for understanding these complex systems and addresses the basic concepts of WECs through detailed analysis and design. A few devices developed and experimentally investigated are discussed in detail, some of which are considered highly novel and still in the preliminary stages of study in the existing literature.

FEATURES

Offers numerous detailed design methods and practical model studies

Presents analysis of the dynamic response behavior of WECs based on experimental studies on scale models

Covers the most recent and novel innovations in the field

Includes a discussion of offshore wind farms as a green energy alternative and examines their conceptual development and design

This book serves as a useful guide for both academicians and professionals in naval architecture and offshore engineering as well as in civil and structural engineering. In addition, it helps in the understanding of structural behavior in terms of risk criteria, efficiency, service life, and reliability. Readers will gain a comprehensive knowledge of the design and development of offshore wave energy devices and the preliminary design of offshore wind turbines, which are currently largely absent in the scientific literature.

Srinivasan Chandrasekaran is currently a Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He commands a rich experience in teaching, research, and industrial consultancy of about 29 years. He has supervised many sponsored research projects and offshore consultancy assignments, both in India and abroad. His active research areas include dynamic analysis and design of offshore structures, Structural health monitoring of ocean structures, Risk and Reliability, Fire resistant design of structures, use of Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) in marine risers, and Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) management in process industries. He was a visiting fellow under the Ministry of Italian University Research (MiUR) invitation to the University of Naples Federico II for two years. He has authored about 170 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals and refereed conferences organized by professional societies worldwide. He has authored eighteen textbooks, which various publishers of international repute publish. He is an active member of several professional bodies and societies, both in India and abroad. He is a vibrant speaker and delivered many keynote addresses in international conferences, workshops, and seminars organized in India and abroad. Dr. Faisal Khan is incoming Professor and Director of Mary O’ Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University. Currently, he is a Professor and the Canada Research Chair (Tier I) of Offshore Safety and Risk Engineering. He is the founder of the Centre for Risk Integrity and Safety and Engineering (C-RISE). He is actively involved with multinational energy industries on the issue of safety, risk and asset integrity. He is the recipient of many National and Regional awards including SPE award for his contribution in Health, Safety and Risk Engineering. He has authored over 500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences on safety, risk and reliability engineering. He has authored eights books on the subject area. Dr. Rouzbeh Abbassi is an Associate Professor and Discipline Leader of the Civil Engineering Program at the School of Engineering of Macquarie University (Sydney, NSW, Australia). He has expertise in environmental, safety and risk engineering applications to different engineering operations such as onshore and offshore renewable energy systems. He actively collaborates with various national and international research and industry partners on multi-million dollar projects in this area, such as the Blue Economy Corporative Research Centre (CRC). He has published over 150 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences in the field of his expertise.
