Designed for cartographic cataloguers and map librarians, this guide should be used in conjunction with the revised AACR2. It should be of use to institutions dealing with substantial cartographic holdings and national agencies charged with creating bibliographic records for cartographic materials.
Electronic publishing has, by and large, replaced traditional map publishing. Digital cartography and geospatial data, and cartographic electronic resources and reserves, are the new standards. Dramatic revisions in Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2, 2002 Revision), combined with digital cartographic publishing, mean that librarians need up-to-date examples, applications, and policies for these materials. Here is authoritative guidance on how to catalogue these new formats. This manual expands on and supplements interpretations in AACR2 to achieve a standardized, consistent, and precise method of description and entry for cataloguing cartographic materials. This essential tool allows cataloguers to interpret and apply new AACR2 revisions to be optimally compatible with bibliographic description between cartographic and other materials. Designed for cartographic cataloguers and map librarians, this guide stands as a supplement to be used in conjunction with the newly revised AACR2. It is a must-have for those institutions dealing with substantial cartographic holdings and national agencies charged with creating bibliographic records for cartographic materials.

The Anglo-American Cataloguing Committee for Cartographic Materials is composed of institutions and associations who deal with the collection and description of cartographic materials in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Institutional members include the British Library, the Library of Congress, the National Archives of Canada, the National Library of Australia, the National Library of Canada, and the National Library of New Zealand. Ten association members are national and regional library and/or cartographic associations from all five countries. Representatives from member institutions and associations are recognized experts on bibliographic control of cartographic materials. Elizabeth U. Mangan served as editor for this edition. She recently retired from the Library of Congress where she was Head of Technical Services, Geography and Map Division.

Contains guidance on how to: Interpret new cataloguing rules for digital geospatial data Expedite the cataloguing process for cartographic electronic resources using new rules Describe early materials, including atlases, based on information from Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books and Manual for Cataloging of Antiquarian Cartographic Materials (Karrow).
