This book collects a series of review articles summarizing the outcomes of collaborative research projects on the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, two of the largest and most disastrous earthquakes in Asia in the last two decades. The articles cover a broad range of aspects, including these earthquakes’ fundamental mechanisms, kinematics, and the geological and geophysical background of their fracture faults. Presenting comprehensive coverage, the book offers a valuable reference guide to these two devastating earthquakes.

Dr. Ching-Hua Lo has been a Professor at the Department of Geosciences, National Taiwan University since 1995. He received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics from Princeton University, USA, in 1990. He has previously served as President of the Chinese Geoscience Union and of the Geological Society in Taipei. He also serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including the Journal of Asian Earth Sciences and Journal of Geological Society of China /Western Pacific Earth Sciences.  Dr. XiweiXu has been a Research Professor and Director of the Institute of Crustal Dynamics, China Earthquake Administration since 2018. He received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989 and was a senior visiting scholar to the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, Harvard University, USA, in 2014. His research interests include seismotectonics, paleoseismology, and structural geology.  Dr. Wen-Yen Chang has been a Professor at the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, National Dong-Hwa University, since 2017. He received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from National Central University in 2006. Having served as President of the Chinese Taipei Geophysical Society since 2018, his research interests include seismology, geophysics, earthquake disaster prevention and mitigation, and remote sensing.   Dr. Masataka Ando received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1974. He was a Professor at the Research Center for Seismology, Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation, Graduate School of Environmental Sciences, Nagoya University, Japan, from 2002 to 2007. He has been a committee member of the Seismological Society of Japan (SSJ) since 1974, and served as President from 1988 to 1990. His research interests include seismology, geophysics and seismotectonics.
