This text is designed for students, especially those who are required to take a science course but who think of chemistry as too abstract, too mathematical, or too remote from their experience. Organized by chemical principles, the book focuses on familiar, personal issues such as DNA testing, antacids and the physical effects of drinking alcohol, and then teaches the chemistry that arises from them. In addition, it integrates applications sections throughout. Students will see how knowledge of basic chemistry can affect their lives, as well as informing their decision making as consumers and voters.
COLIN BAIRD teaches at the University of Western Ontario. He is the author of Environmental Chemistry (W.H. Freeman). WENDY GLOFFKE taught general, organic and biochemistry and liberal arts chemistry at Cedar Crest (PA) College for eight years and is now a full-time science writer and educational consultant.
