About fifty year of field campaigns throughout numerous Italian non-marine, intramontane or marginal sedimentary basins, from which a great amount of mollusc material was collected, led the authors to summarize their knowledge on the gastropods in this book. It deals with 155 species of freshwater, brackish and land gastropods recorded from sites ranging from Oligocene to Holocene. Several species were identified as new to science. Each species is concisely treated, accompanied by illustrations, essential synonymy, short taxonomic notes, habitat, as well as fossil and Recent occurrence. Most of the species are endemic to Italy; others are palaeoniogeographically significant indicating connections with Central and South Eastern Europe at various epochs. A faunal turnover through time is examined, highlighting a high extinction rate among the Italian molluscan fauna. A map displaying the geographical distribution of the main Cenozoic basins of Italy, a table showing the chronostratigraphical distribution of the treated species, and an index of species and genera names are also included.

Daniela Esu was born in Rome. She graduated in Natural Science at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", where she spent her working career initially as Researcher, and then as Associate Professor of Palaeontology since 1992. She has held courses on Palaeontology, Stratigraphy, and Palaeolimnology. Her scientific activity has been focused in the taxonomic, palaeoecological, and biochronological aspects of the Cenozoic Italian non-marine and oligo-mesohaline molluscan assemblages of gastropods and bivalves of the Italian peninsula and surrounding islands, and on their relationships with the Mediterranean and European faunas. The results of her research have been presented at several international and national congresses, and reported in numerous publications on Italian and international journals.

Born in Rome in 1935, Odoardo Girotti graduated in Geology at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1963. From 1964 to 1967 he was carrying out field campaigns for the Geological Map of Italy. He had an assistant professorship at the Geological Department of "La Sapienza" until 1980, continuing afterwards as Associate Professor of Stratigraphical Geology until retirement in 2005. He has held courses on Regional Geology, Quarternary Geology & Palaeontology, and Stratigraphy. Research activity is dedicated to the geological, stratigraphical and palaeontological features of the Italian Cenozoic deposits, mainly on non-marine basins. Results of his studies have been presented at several international and national congresses, and published in Italian and international journals.
