This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach with a wide scope of perspectives on primary healthcare, describing related principles, care models, practices and social contexts. It combines aspects of development, research and education applied in primary health care, providing practitioners and scholars with a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge and delivery models of healthcare in community settings. It covers the practical, philosophical and scholarly issues pertinent to the delivery, financing, planning, ethics, health politics, professional and technological development, resources, and monitoring in primary health care. Contributors are from a diverse range of academic and professional backgrounds, bringing together collective expertise in mainstream medicine, nursing, allied health, Chinese medicine, health economics, administration, law, public policy, housing management, information technology and mass communications. As such, the book does not follow the common clinical practice or service-based approach found in most texts on primary care. The contents will serve as a useful reference work for policymakers, researchers, community health practitioners, health executives and higher education students.

Dr Ben Fong is a family doctor and a specialist in community medicine. He holds an Honorary Clinical Associate Professorship at the two local medical schools in Hong Kong, and is interested in primary care, health care systems and family medicine. Ben has been the Deputy Medical Superintendent of Prince Henry Hospital in Sydney, the Director of the University Health Service, and Senior Assistant Commissioner of the Auxiliary Medical Service of the Government. He commissioned the Union Hospital and Ruttonjee Hospital.

Dr Vincent Law is a senior lecturer in the School of Professional Education and Executive Development at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He teaches social sciences, applied sciences, and management subjects, and is an experienced researcher in social sciences and public policy. In recent years, he has participated in some large-scale consultancies and research projects for both the government and private organisations. He has authored several academic journal papers and three books on Chinese wisdom and its contemporary application (in Chinese).

Professor Albert Lee, MD, LLM with distinction (Arbitration and DR), is the Founding Director of the Centre for Health Education and Health Promotion, and Associate Dean of General Education of Wu Yee Sun College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) US, an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, UK,  a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Vice President of the UNESCO-HK Association. He has served as a WHO Advisor/Consultant since 2003 and has contributed models of care for school health which are applicable internationally.
