This handbook is an interdisciplinary and comprehensive reference covering all aspects of cell biosensors. It is divided into four main sections which are led and organized by numerous international experts. The scope of coverage includes:

  • Fundamentals and genetics for biosensor applications
  • Transducers, Materials and Systems
  • Markets, innovation and education
  • Application of biosensors in business

Biosensor research is an exciting hybrid world where biologists, chemists, physicists, engineers and computer engineers come together. This handbook will serve as an invaluable living resource for all researchers in academia and industry working with cell biosensors.

Gerald Thouand received his PhD degree in Microbiology from the University of Nancy, France, in 1993. He is now full professor in microbiology at the University of Nantes, Deputy for research innovation at the French Ministry of Research (DRRT Pays de La Loire) and Auditor at the Institute of Higher Studies for Science and Technology (IHEST, Paris). His research interests include environmental monitoring of biodegradation and biotechnology using microbial biosystems. Mainly he is involved in the development of biosensors for chemical pollutants detection and pathogenic bacteria. He is a member of the Society for Applied Microbiology (SFAM, UK) and of the scientific committee of the International Society of Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence. He is Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology and Editor for Environmental Science and Pollution Research (ESPR).

Section 1: Markets, innovation, industries and regulation.- Section 2: Fundamentals and genetics for Biosensors applications.- Section 3: Transducers and methods for the detection of biological signals.- Section 4: Lab on a chip, materials and microsystems.- Section 5: Applications of biosensors to the main economic sectors.- Section 6: Data mining and big data processing applied to biosensors.- Section 7: Education and new pedagogy.
