This work aims to provide a foundation for evolutionary theory, to examine patterns of genetic variation within natural insect populations and to explore the underlying mechanisms that lead to the genetic divergence of co-existing organisms. In particular, the text investigates research on fine-scale genetic structure in natural insect populations. Part I presents case studies of adapative genetic structure in natural insect populations, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the experimental methods employed. Part II addresses the ecological mechanisms that produce adaptive genetic structure.

Part I Genetic structure in specialist insect populations: case studies within and between plant differentiation of scale insects and the conundrum of local adaptation, D. Alstad; agents of selection and local adaptation in a leafmining insect, S. Mopper; local adaptation in a dispersive gall-forming midge, P. Stiling; testing fine-scale genetic variation - an examination of experimental design and analysis, W. Boecklen and S. Mopper. Part II Mechanisms: host plant and population genetic structure - the strength of selection - intraspecific variation in host plant quality and the fitness of herbivores, S. Strauss and R. Karban; within-plant resource fluctuation as a deterrent to deme formation, N. Cobb and T. Whitham; host plant isolation and local adaptation of sedentary insects, L. Hanks and R. Denno; within-plant variation in chemical allocation patterns - does defense cost an arm and a leg or just a few fingers?. Part III Mechanisms - insect life history and population genetic structure: the link between life history and genetic structure in phytophagous insect populations, M. Peterson and R. Denno; social behavior, gene flow and genetic structure, J. Costa and K. Ross; maternal and paternal effects on genetic variation in herbivores, M. Rossiter; intrademic genetic structure in herbivorous insects - empirical observations and theoretical context, D. McCauley and P. Goff. Part IV Microgeographic genetic structure - implications for speciation: evolution of host plant specilization in a checkerspot butterfly - individuals, populations, metapopulations and host plant races, C. Thomas and M. Singer; host race formation and sympatric speciation in a specialist insect, L. Schmoetxer and S. Faeth; host race formation and sympatric speciation in the Apple Maggot fly - fact or fiction?, J. Feder.
