The explosion of new data on fission processes and properties of neutron-rich nuclei made possible by new detection and accelerator facilities called forth an international conference to highlight the latest results and future directions in this rapidly developing field. The conference emphasized the following three areas: (1) fission modes and reactions — particle-induced fission, spontaneous fission, bimodal fission, Coulomb fission, fusion-fission, deep inelastic collisions, fragmentation and accelerated beams of neutron-rich nuclei; (2) fission process — isotopic and energy distributions, neutron multiplicities, spin distributions, cold fission (cluster radioactivity), ternary fission, fission isomers, fission barriers, muon fission and applications; (3) properties of neutron-rich nuclei — masses, decay properties, nuclear structure, nuclei at the drip line, and nuclear astrophysics.
Developments in fission, fusion, cluster radioactivity and the extension of the periodic system of elements, W. Greiner; discoveries of the heaviest elements, G. Munzenberg; cluster radioactivity and related phenomena, D.N. Poenaru et al; viscosity in the fission of hot nuclei, B.B. Back et al; recent results on the studies of nuclei far from stability in IMP, Y.X. Luo; superheavy nuclei in self-consistent nuclear models, M. Bender et al; new results on superasymmetric fission at intermediate energy, J. Aysto et al; breakup and fusion reactions induced by radioactive beams, A.M. Breitschaft et al; radioactive nuclear beams - novel structures, simple signatures and advanced facilities, R. Casten; alpha and exotic cluster decay, D.S. Delion et al. (Part contents).
