In 2005, during the "First Conference on Faunistics and Zoogeography of European Trichoptera" in Luxembourg, the idea for a distribution atlas of European caddisflies was discussed for the first time. All participants were enthusiastic about such a collection. Six years later - as part of the EU funded BioFresh project - we finally could start off to realise this idea. Since 2011, more than 630,000 occurrence records (about 450,000 adult data) of European caddisflies contributed by 83 Trichoptera experts and the authors have been compiled. In the present book, point records of caddisflies are illustrated on 1,579 maps and for the first time provide a comprehensive overview of the distribution patterns of European Trichoptera families, species and subspecies. These maps serve as a valuable base for future analyses, conservation and management priorities of this fascinating insect order.

Note from the authors: The DAET data download through the Freshwater Biodiversity Data Portal (http://data.freshwaterbiodiversity.eu) is currently being prepared. Until the data are published there, members of the DAET consortium and buyers of the book can request data directly at the authors.

Peter Neu is private researcher, dealing with ecology, taxonomy and distribution of Trichoptera for more than 25 years. For this book, he was responsible for data acquisition, data management and compilation of the distribution maps.

Hans Malicky is an internationally known Trichoptera expert, working on the taxonomy, ecology, faunistics and zoogeography of this insect order. He has described more than 2,500 Trichoptera species and published more than 500 articles in a variety of scientific journals. He authored the book "Atlas of European Trichoptera" (2nd ed. 2004), "The Caddisflies of Greece" (2005; in German), "Atlas of Southeast Asian Trichoptera" (2010) as well as "Habitats of Caddisflies" (2014; in German). For this book, he contributed a considerable amount of data and was responsible for the quality control regarding the distribution of caddisflies.

Wolfram Graf is a freshwater ecologist and expert in European Trichoptera and Plecoptera research. He investigates the taxonomy, ecology and zoogeography of these insect orders for 30 years. He has published over 200 articles and described 30 new caddisfly species. He coauthored the book "Atlas of Central European Trichoptera Larvae" (2nd ed. 2011). For this book, he provided a large amount of data and was responsible for the quality control regarding the distribution of caddisflies.

Astrid Schmidt-Kloiber is a river ecologist with a background in benthic invertebrates and expertise in database design, development and management. She is leading the development and edition of the online resources "Freshwater Information Platform" and "freshwater-ecology.info". For this book, she was responsible for the funding, overall organisation and management.
