Europe's Experiment in Fusion

JET is the joint European project to build and operate a large thermonuclear fusion device at a site in Oxfordshire, England. The largest tokamak ever built, JET is unique amongst contemporary experiments. Its subsequent, and continuing, technical success is the result of a dynamic involvement of all the major fusion laboratories of western Europe. The project is a major step in the unification of the European Fusion Programme and an outstanding example of community spirit within Europe. ``Europe's Experiment in Fusion'' is comprehensively written and traces the background leading up to the JET project. The author details the practical setting-up of the operation, from technical and financial aspects through to the problems encountered in any such joint European effort. The final design decisions are summarised and the programmes of construction and operation fully described. Extensive colour illustrations are provided and the book concludes with the inauguration of the device by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
