This book explores the issue of thermal environment and its effects on the heat balance, physiology, behavior, and performance of domestic and wild animals. It presents a simple and comprehensive approach of the main environmental components that influence animal life, as well as equations to estimate the radiation balance in an environment and also to estimate all thermoregulatory mechanisms that animals use in response to situations of cold or heat. It contains unique chapters that discuss the interactions between mammals, aquatic animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, bees, and other arthropods and their environment with a description of the main environmental factors that affect them.

Joao Batista Freire de Souza Jr: Zootechnician with a Master Degree in Animal Science from the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid. Currently pursuing a PhD in Animal Science and is a researcher at the Center for Studies in Nutrition Monogastric (NENMO), and THERMOBIO linked to Laboratory of Biometeorology, Environmental Biophysics and Animal Welfare. Operates mainly in studies involving physical, physiological and nutritional factors on the thermoregulation of animals, especially birds and ruminants. Received prize in 2008 for the best paper presented at the oral section of the 18th International Congress of Biometeorology held in Tokyo, Japan, International Society of Biometeorology. Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Animal Behaviour and Biometeorology. Reviewer of following journals: International Journal of Biometeorology, Brazilian Journal of Animal Science, Journal of Animal Behaviour and Biometeorology, Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinaria e Zootecnia, Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agricola e Ambiental.
