This new volume, Volume 1 of the two-volume set Biofuels, cover many aspects of the diversity and production of biofuels. The chapter authors present in-depth compositional analyses of feedstock used for biofuels, the variability of feedstock based on climatic condition and place of cultivation, and the strength of feedstock in terms of growing under marginal conditions. Diversity in feedstock is associated with diversity in enzymes needed to digest these biomasses, and this section also deals with diversity in biomass saccharifying enzymes as well as microbes producing these enzymes.
The volume goes on to discuss various biofuel molecules beyond ethanol that are currently in the pipeline at different stages of development.
Volume 2 of this two-volume set covers production and ecological assessment, focusing on genetic, biochemical, and environmental factors that affect the production of biofuels. It describes different host platforms and process conditions commonly used for biofuel production and also provides a comprehensive understanding of potential positive and negative impacts of biofuel usage on our environmental ecosystem.
Dr. Syed Shams Yazdani’s early experience as a malaria researcher led him to generate technologies for the production of three malaria vaccine candidates that are particularly relevant to the needs of current society. At present, Dr. Shams Yazdani is leading athe Department of Biotechnology (DBT) funded Centre at International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, India called DBT-ICGEB and the Centre for Advanced Bioenergy Research, New Delhi, India, to further expand the bioenergy research program and exploit the intellectual properties for commercialization. The team is designing enzyme systems for effective hydrolysis of agricultural residues and developing microbial strains for production of advanced biofuels. Harnessing the potential of algae for biofuel production is another important research area of the Centre.
Influence of Plant Community Composition on Biomass Production in Planted Grasslands. Prospecting for Energy-Rich Renewable Raw Materials: Agave Leaf Case Study. Predicting Potential Global Distributions of Two Miscanthus Grasses: Implications for Horticulture, Biofuel Production, and Biological Invasions. Euphorbia tirucalli L.–Comprehensive Characterization of a Drought-Tolerant Plant with a Potential as Biofuel Source. A Thermophilic Ionic Liquid-Tolerant Cellulase Cocktail for the Production of Cellulosic Biofuels. Diversity and Functional Significance of Cellulolytic Microbes Living in Termite, Pill-Bug and Stem-Borer Guts. Fatty Aldehydes in Cyanobacteria Are a Metabolically Flexible Precursor for a Diversity of Biofuel Products. Selection and Characterization of Biofuel-Producing Environmental Bacteria Isolated from Vegetable Oil-Rich Wastes. Effects of Escherichia coli on Mixotrophic Growth of Chlorella minutissima and Production of Biofuel Precursors. An Engineered Pathway for the Biosynthesis of Renewable Propane. Heterogeneity of Alkane Chain-Length in Freshwater and Marine Cyanobacteria.
