This work covers both the experimental and theoretical developments in cavity quantum electrodynamics from the basics to recent discoveries. The presentation is aimed at graduate students and young researchers in the field of quantum and nonlinear optics. The following topics are covered in detail: enhancement and inhibition of spontaneous emission, Jaynes-Cummings model, vacuum field Rabi splittings, collapse and revival, micromasers, quantum interference effects, QED with micro and nano structures and tests of the fundamentals of quantum mechanics.
