This undergraduate textbook covers all aspects of this key subject by teaching the principles of petrology with applications to the origin, composition, and field relationships of rocks. It features advanced study boxes that target specific case studies.
This undergraduate textbook on the key subject of geology closely follows the core curriculum adopted by most universities throughout the world and is a must for every geology student. It covers all aspects of petrology, including not only the principles of petrology but also applications to the origin, composition, and field relationships of rocks. Although petrology is commonly taught in the junior year, this book is a useful resource for graduate students as well.

Prior to joining the American University of Sharjah (AUS) as Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies and Professor of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Gautam Sen was Associate Dean of Research at Florida International University (FIU). At FIU, he also served as Chair of the Department of Earth Sciences (currently Earth and Environment), and was the recipient of research awards and the prestigious Excellence in Service Award. He is presently on a leave-of-absence from FIU, where he is a tenured Full Professor. Dr. Sen has been a member of many US national and international committees that included research and instrumentation panels at the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. He served as a program officer at the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC (later in Arlington, VA). Dr. Sen also founded the Florida Center for Analytical Electron Microscopy, which serves the entire United States via remote operation of its instruments. Professor Sen has written/edited books and published papers in highly ranked journals, including Science and Nature. One of his papers was chosen to be the cover article in Science. Dr. Sen has served on international committees, chaired conferences, given numerous lectures and chaired technical conferences worldwide. He has supervised four doctoral dissertations, four post-doctoral fellows, and served on many more doctoral and master's committees. He has supervised many graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Professor Sen received his PhD in Geosciences from the University of Texas at Dallas, USA, and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Introduction to Igneous Rocks.- Phase relations in simple systems: Key to magma generation, crystallization, and mixing.- Phase Relationships in Ternary Systems.- Magma formation and segregation.- Igneous Rock Series: Basalt Magma Evolution.- Basalt Magma Generation: Perspectives from Experimental Petrology.- Basaltic Magmatism at Mid-Oceanic Ridges and Hawaiian Hot Spot.- Large Igneous Provinces: Deccan Traps and Columbia River Basalts.- Subduction Zone Magmas.- Alkaline and Ultra-Alkaline Rocks, Carbonatites, and Kimberlites.- Anorthosites and Komatiites.- Sediments.- Sedimentary Rocks.- Metamorphism and Metamorphic Rocks.- Metamorphic Facies, Reactions, and P-T-t Paths.

"Sen (Am. Univ. of Sharjah, UAE) focuses on processes and provides a complete description of the various igneous rock associations and their tectonic settings. ... The text presupposes a significant familiarity with rocks and minerals and is most suitable for a senior-level or first-year graduate course. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty." (G. N. Eby, Choice, Vol. 52 (10), June, 2015)

"'Petrology: Principles and Practice' comprise sixteen chapters (twelve of them address igneous rocks and the rest concern sedimentary and metamorphic rocks) aided by two appendices. ... I am confident that 'Petrology: Principles and Practice' by Gautam Sen would immensely serve to enthuse this generation of young undergraduate and (even) graduate earth science students by way of elucidating the principles underlying the thermo-mechanical dynamics of the Earth and its role in generating such fascinating products called as rocks." (N. V. Chalapathi Rao,Journal of the Geological Society of India, Vol. 84, 2014)
