This book is a compilation of recent developments in the field of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and climate change adaption (Eco-DRR/CCA) globally. It provides further evidence that ecosystem-based approaches make economic sense, and showcases how research has progressively filled knowledge gaps about translating this concept into practice. It presents a number of methods, and tools that illustrate how Eco-DRR/CCA has been applied for various ecosystems and hazard contexts around the world. It also discusses how innovative institutional arrangements and policies are shaping the field of Eco-DRR/CCA. The book is of relevance to scientists, practitioners, policy-makers and students in the field of ecosystem management for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Foreword.- Introduction: practical and policy uptake of Eco-DRR globally: Where do we stand?.- ecosystems as climate-compatible development infrastructure: making the case for ecosystem-based investments in coastal zones of Kenya & Sri Lanka.- The adaptive economy of Eco-DRR: a South Pacific example of climate change adaptation.- Cost-benefit analysis of ecosystem based adaptation and disaster risk reduction in a national park.- Developing a framework for the financial assessment of Ecosystem Disaster Risk Reduction interventions: a case study from Bangladesh.- Economic Benefits of Eco-Safe Roads in Nepal.- Decision Tools and Approaches to Advance Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation in the 21st Century.- Coastal dune management for Eco-DDR and EbA: Experiences from Indonesia, Vietnam, and Chile.- The use of geo-information in Eco-DRR: from mapping to decision support.- Implementing Eco-DRR and CCA in urban planning in developing countries: challenges and lessons from Kathmandu, Nepal.- Assessment and Management of Flood Risks in Nouakchott (Mauritania).- Risk perception for participatory ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change in the Mata Atlantica, Brazil.- Protected Areas, Biodiversity and the Risks of Climate Change in Southeast Asia.- Governance of disaster risk as governance of social-ecological systems. Environmental and social feedbacks.- In Togo, the Ministry of Environment is implementing an innovative integrated Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Land Management Project.- Towards anticipatory management of forest and peat fires to enhance local resilience and reduce natural capital depletion.- Assessing vulnerability and planning disaster risk reduction in Central Himalaya: A case study of Garhwal, Uttarakhand, India.- Integrating landscape dimensions in disaster risk reduction: A cluster approach.- Nature-based coastal defense: Physical restrictions and engineering challenges.- Assessment of performance and durability of ecosystem-based and Low-Regret coastal protection measures in Disaster Risk Reduction.- Ecosystem-based approaches towards reducing drought risks for small-scale farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.- Opportunities and challenges around green and gray infrastructure after the Great East Japan Earthquake.- Risk drivers and their consequences: how the Pacific has responded through joint national action plans for disaster risk management and climate change.- Role of ‘Embungs’ man made water reservoir to mitigate water shortage in the dry areas of East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.- Uncovering joint objectives in ecosystem based disaster risk reduction and water security.- Ecosystems-based strategies for communities’ resilience to climate variability in Indonesia.- Conclusions and way forward.- Index.
