This edition of an undergraduate textbook on polymer chemistry and technology has been updated in respect of new technology, to include recent developments in crystal polymers, conducting polymers, thermoplastic elastomers, degradable polymers and polymer blends.
Polymer chemistry draws upon all the traditional subdivisions of chemistry: organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and biochemical. This is the second edition of an undergraduate text in polymer chemistry and technology. It has been substantially updated in respect of new technology since the first edition. Topics which have increased in importance in recent years have been added; among these are liquid crystal polymers, conducting polymers, thermoplastic elastomers, degradable polymers, and polymer blends. Students interested in polymer chemistry at undergraduate level will find concepts built up from basics, including polymer-forming reactions. It should also serve as an introduction to the field for the industrial chemist with no prior training in polymer chemistry, or as a reference source for the practising polymer chemist.

Malcolm P. Stevens is Professor of Chemistry, University of Hartford. His previous professional affiliations include Chevron Research Company, Robert College (Istanbul), and the American University of Beirut.

PART I: Polymer Structure and Properties: Basic principles; Molecular weight and polymer solutions; Chemical structure and polymer morphology; Chemical structure and polymer properties; Evaluation, characterization, and analysis of polymers; PART II: Vinyl Polymers: Free radical vinyl polymerization; Ionic and group transfer polymerization; Vinyl polymerization with complex coordination catalysts; Reactions of vinyl polymers; PART III: Nonvinyl Polymers: Step-reaction and ring-opening polymerization; Polyethers, polysulfides, and related polymers; Polyesters; Polyamides and related polymers; Phenol-, urea-, and melamine-formaldehyde polymers; Inorganic-organic polymers; Miscellaneous organic polymers; Natural polymers; Appendix A: Commonly used polymer acronyms; Appendix B: Polymer literature; Appendix C: Sources of laboratory experiments in polymer chemistry.
