Since the first edition of this book, AIDS has emerged, and there has been increasing public awareness of the problems of infection. Thousands of antibiotics have been discovered and are used widely, but resistance to many of these antibiotics has built up in the microbial community, so infection by microbes is always possible. The sinister implications of AIDS and its attendant opportunistic infections emphasise the importance of medical students receiving formal training in this area, with the aim of this book being to give them a grasp of the principles of antimicrobial drug treatment.
