The HEP issue on Metabolic Control provides a state-of the art overview over both classical concepts and emerging areas in metabolism and associated disorders. In this context, metabolic control is highlighted at various levels of complexity ranging from transcriptional mechanisms in metabolic pathway control over metabolic communication routes in physiology and pathophysiology to current treatment modalities and options in metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes and obesity. Dedicated chapters by leading experts in their fields provide a concise overview over important areas in metabolic research at a molecular level, including the role of the central nervous system in metabolism, inflammation and metabolism, pancreatic hormone signaling, brown adipose tissue, and therapeutic concepts.

Stefan Herzig, PhD, is physician and C3 Professor in Pharmacology. He studied human medicine in Marburg/Lahn und Kiel and is provisional Leader of the Institute for Pharmacology since 2006 and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Teaching at the University of Cologne since 2011. In addition he is chairman of the committee for research and teaching, for information and communication, of the committee for teacher training and (continuing) professional development as well as of the Administrative Council of the student support fonds.

Stephan Herzig obtained his PhD from the University of Göttingen, Germany, in 1999. Supported by the German Research Foundation DFG he then joined the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, CA, for his postdoctoral training. In 2004, he established an Emmy-Noether and Marie Curie Junior Research Group at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany. He became Head of a Joint Research Division between the DKFZ, Heidelberg University, and Heidelberg University Hospital in 2010, followed by his appointment as a Full W3 Professor at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University. Since 2015, Stephan Herzig is the director of the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer (IDC) at the Helmholtz Center Munich and he holds the chair in Molecular Metabolic Control at the Technical University Munich as well as a Honorary Professorship at the Medical Faculty at Heidelberg University. Stephan Herzig studies the molecular mechanisms of severe metabolic disorders and their complications, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.
