The CO2-laser technology may be considered the most advanced in the laser field. Research has been stimulated strongly because of its high potential for many scientific and industrial applications. This text is primarily devoted to the main, more established developments of the CO2-laser. Advances in continuous systems, pulsed systems, mode-locked pulses, and the amplification of short pulses are dealt with in detail. This is done by giving an extensive treatment of relevant molecular physics, gas kinetics, excitation and relaxation processes, and laser physics pertinent to CO2. The book also provides a theoretical background of specific technologies used in various devices. Many numerical values of physical constants and accurate spectroscopic data of CO2 isotopes are included.
W. J. Witteman has been professor in laser physics at the University of Twente (The Netherlands) from 1969 until 1999. Next to numerous articles in the field of CO2-lasers, excimer lasers and free electron lasers he has published: In 1987 "The CO2 Laser" (Springer Series in Optical Sciences, Vol.54) In 1996 as co-author "Gas Lasers-Recent Developments and Future Prospects" (Kluwer Academic Publishers) In 2004 as co-author "Handbook of Laser Technolog - Applications" (Institute of Physics Publishing). He was the author of the chapter on "Excimer, F2, N2 and H2 Lasers".
