This book explains the formation of biofilm on materials surfaces in an industrial setting. The authors describe new developments in understanding of biofilm formation, detection, and control from the viewpoint of materials science and engineering. The book details the range of issues caused by biofilm formation and the variety of affected industries.

Dr. Hideyuki Kanematsu, FIMF ( a Fellow of IMF) is a full professor and the Deputy President of National Institute of Technology, Suzuka College, Japan. There he is a researcher in Environment Materials Engineering. He is interested particularly in the interfacial phenomena between the metallic surface and organisms from an environmental science viewpoint. He holds a B.Eng. (1981), a M.Eng.(1983) and a Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering (1989), all from Nagoya University. He is active as a member, board member, and editorial member of ASM International, the National Association of Surface Finishing, USA (NASF), the institute of Materials Finishing, UK (IMF), as well as the Minerals, Metals & Materials society, USA (TMS), the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Japan Institute of Metals (JIM) and the Iron & Steel Institute of Japan (ISIJ). He was the NASF Scientific Achievement Award Winner and now literally the leading researcher for Surface Engineering in the world.

Dr. Dana M. Barry is a Research Professor in Clarkson University's Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Senior Technical Writer & Editor in the University's Center for Advanced Materials Processing.  She is a Professor and Scientific Board President for Ansted University and has served as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Suzuka College, Japan, numerous times (2002, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, & 2014). She holds a B.A. degree (1971) and a M.S degree (1972) in Science Education from SUNY Potsdam, a M.S. degree in Chemistry (1974) from Clarkson University, a Ph.D. in Education (1985) from Columbia Pacific, an honorary Ph.D. in Science Education (2001) from Ansted University, and Ph.D. in Engineering (2011) from Osaka University, Japan.  She has over 200 professional publications and many honors including 19 Consecutive Apex Awards for Publication Excellence from Communications Concepts in Springfield, Virginia. In addition, she is a Chemistry Ambassador for the American Chemical Society and serves as an officer for its Northern New York Section.
