This volume contains special contributions presented at the 5th International Conference on Energy and Sustainability, held by the Wessex Institute of Technology. It is a companion to the Volume containing most of the contributions (Vol. 186, WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment) and comprises papers presented orally at the Conference.

The modern world is highly dependent on the exploitation of fossil fuels. More recently, resources depletion and severe environmental effects deriving from the continuous use of these fuels has resulted in an increasing amount of interest in renewable energy resources and the search for sustainable energy policies. The changes required to progress from an economy mainly based on hydrocarbons to one taking advantage of sustainable energy resources are massive and require considerable scientific research as well as engineering systems. The effect also involves collaboration between different disciplines in order to arrive at optimum solutions, including buildings, energy networks, convenience systems, new energy storage solutions, waste to energy technologies, and many others. This book, along with its companion volume, covers topics related to sustainability in energy and power production, storage, distribution and management.
These include: Energy Policies; Renewable Energy Resources; Sustainable Energy Production; Environmental Risk Management; Green Buildings; Energy Storage; Biofuels; Processing of Oil and Gas; Drilling and Well Design; CO2 Capture and Management; Pipelines; Energy Efficiency; Energy from Waste; Energy and Transportation.

Contents Section 1: Green buildings Cost-benefit analysis of living wall systems on school building skins in a hot climate; Sustainable housing maintenance management model; Outdoor thermal performance investigations: towards a sustainable tropical environment; Towards achieving green buildings in developing countries based on a traditional approach with reference to the hot-arid climate Section 2: Energy assessment Sustainability of bioenergy in Malaysia with reference to palm oil biomass: adopting principles governing bioenergy policy in the UK; Rationale for the use of DC microgrids:feasibility, efficiency and protection analysis; Technical assessment of LED and induction street lighting for a power utility in Malaysia; Analysis of the chemical constitutions of Yaojie shale oil in China by gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC - MS) Section 3: Energy and transportation Biofuels: their emergence and implications for sustainability in aviation; Blends of surfactants and EVA as cold flow improvers for diesel fuels Section 4: Environmental risk Disaster and restoration governance of the 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosion; Fugitive methane emissions from the natural gas distribution network of Titas Gas and the environmental risks; Comparison of the effect of two support materials on copper removal from aqueous solution in the activated sludge process; Can scenic indicators help sustain Fraser Hill's healthy ecosystems? Section 5: CO2 capturing and management Thickening carbon dioxide with amphiphilic block copolymer; Optimising Isochrysis sp. carbon fixation: a step towards the greening of fossil fuel; Sorption equilibria of CO2 on synthesized CaO in the presence of water Section 6: Renewable energy resources Theoretical analysis of a small-scale solar power system using an R-245fa Rankine cycle with a scroll and twin screw expander; Modelling the thermal impact of ground source heat pump systems as a function of hydraulic conductivity; Screening of hydrogen bond acceptor for the synthesis of low transition temperature mixtures with malic acid Section 7: Sustainable energy production The impact of climate change on wind power production in Scotland; Preparation of TEG material based on conducting polymer PEDOT: PSS through treatment by nitric acid Section 8: Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) Swarm intelligence based State-of-Charge optimization for charging Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles; Experimental study of using a PEM fuel cell/battery hybrid system to power small UAVs Section 9: Waste to energy Waste to energy in Hungary: new trends in the North-Balaton Regional Waste Management System of Hungary; Estimation of landfill gas production and the energy potential of municipal solid wastes from the Upper Dagong dumpsite using the Philippine Landfill Gas Model v.1; Diverting Municipal Solid Waste from landfill: new methods in Hungarian waste management; Development process for tar filtering from biomass pyrolysis; Development of newly designed combined grinding equipment; Development of a briquetting facility with the integration of a hydraulic system for biomass densification; Features of biogas technology application in severe climatic conditions
