Light phenomena have intrigued humankind since prehistory. Think of the rainbow, a sunset on the sea, a game of shadows. Humans have always used light for their own needs, from cooking food to illuminating a room.

However, light is not only limited to what we can see with our eyes. The invisible part of the electromagnetic spectrum is broad and dynamic. This book outlines the mysteries and wonders of electromagnetism, heat, and light. It also covers the history of our scientific understanding of light.

The dark as well as the bright sides of light are fully explored in these pages, from their impact on our world to their use in cutting-edge technologies in a variety of fields. Numerous full-color images and drawings complement the text, and light phenomena are explained in a simple and engaging way.

Olmes Bisi is a professor of Physics at the faculty of Engineering, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He has a degree in physics with honors from University of Modena and was a researcher at the Theoretical Chemistry Department (University of Oxford UK), at the Research Laboratory of IBM, Yorktown Heights, (NY) and at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart (Germany). Beside his research activities in optoelectronics, he is also involved in science education within the project Reggio Children and co-authored the book “Socio-cognitive and Sociocultural Approaches to Science in Early Childhood”, Patakis Publishers, Athens, 2012.

"The book is very well written in a nice breezy conversational style. ... There are numerous illustrations - 278 in total, many in colour. ... I would definitely recommend this book to my local middle school or primary school classes as an introduction to the world of science in general and optics in particular. I believe this type of teaching methodology will definitely light a spark in young minds and 'turn them on' to science." (Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan, Contemporary Physics, Vol. 58 (2), February, 2017)
