Written by global experts in the field, this in-depth engineering resource discusses the theory, design, analysis, and application of fluid film lubrication, providing proven methods for reducing friction in rotating machinery components. The book thoroughly addresses all aspects of the topic, from viscosity and rotor-bearing dynamics to elastohydrodynamic lubrication and fluid inertia effects. Fully worked examples, analytical and numerical methods of solutions, practice problems, and detailed illustrations are included in this authoritative reference.

Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication covers:

Introduction to tribology
Viscosity and rheology of lubricants
Mechanics of lubricant films and basic equations
Hydrodynamic lubrication
Finite bearings
Thermohydrodynamic analysis of fluid film bearings
Design of hydrodynamic bearings
Dynamics of fluid film bearings
Externally pressurized lubrication
Fluid inertia effects and turbulence in fluid film lubrication
Gas-lubricated bearings
Hydrodynamic lubrication of rolling contacts
Elastohydrodynamic lubrication
Vibration analysis with lubricated ball bearings
Thermal effect in rolling–sliding contacts

Prof. M.K. Ghosh received his Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering) degree in 1966 from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India, M.Tech (1968) and Ph.D. (1979) in Mechanical Engineering respectively from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India. Professor Ghosh joined as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT BHU, Varanasi in 1969 and subsequently worked as Professor of Mechanical Engineering since 1993. He has worked as a NRC Research Associate during 1982-1984 and as a Senior NRC Research Associate during 1989-90 at the NASA Lewis (Presently NASA Glenn), Research Center, Cleveland, OH (USA). He was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur during 1987-88. Professor Ghosh is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers since 1984, a Life Member of the Tribology Society of India (TSI) and served as a member of the Executive Committee of the TSI during 1995-97. He is a member of the honorary editorial board of the journal "Advances in Vibration Engineering, the scientific journal of the "Vibration Institute of India". He is a recipient of the University Grants Commission of India "Career Award" in Engineering in 1984. Professor Ghosh's areas of research interests lie in Tribology, Vibration and Dynamics & Control of Mechanical Systems. He has published about 60 papers in peer reviewed international journals. Professor Ghosh has supervised about 33 graduate theses and 7 PhD theses.
