Mosquitos and black flies pose significant public health threats in many parts of the world and are a nuisance even in areas where they do not carry disease. In the search for environmentally safe pesticides, scientific attention has turned to strains of bacteria that are naturally toxic to these insects, but harmless to humans, other insects, animals, and microorganisms. The successful use of "Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis" to fight agricultural insect pests suggests that bacteria might also be effective against insect disease vectors. The contributors assess research on Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (B.t.i.) and Bacillus sphaericus and their effects on the larvae of mosquitoes and black flies. The discussion focuses on the nature and genetics of the bacteria's parasporal bodies, the cloning of their crystal endotoxins, and the attempts to transfer genes for the endotoxins to larval food sources. Commercial use of B.t.i. and B. sphaericus preparations to combat river blindness, Bancroftian filiariasis and other diseases of this type is assessed, and Sutherland concludes by addressing the questions of government regulation and public perception that will, as much as scientific findings, determine the practical use of these new methods of biological control.
