In this volume, the authors have made a significant contribution to the understanding of the toxicity of two important groups of compounds - alcohols and esters. The authors have integrated the data, interpreted the results of numerous studies, and have provided detailed lists of references to facilitate the approach of serious students to the original literature. It will be clear to the reader familiar with Browning's work that toxicology has made vast strides in the past few decades. While descriptive toxicology retains its importance as a method of defining toxicological problems, mechanistic toxicology has expanded to help explain the underlying causes of toxic effects. Much use has been made of descriptive toxicology in environmental and occupational risk assessment. In the long run, mechanistic data when applied to estimating the risks of exposure will help to establish more accurate and acceptable standards for exposure to alcohols and esters in the workplace and in the environment.
