This volume reflects the significant advances in experimentation and interpretation that present new insights into the history of molecules that absorb radiation.
In the past 25 years, the emergence of lasers and computer technology have strongly influenced research on the dynamic behaviour of excited states and other transients. This volume reflects the significant advances in experimentation and interpretation in the field, presenting new insights into the history of molecules that absorb radiation. It is part of a continuing series intended to explore the frontiers of photochemistry.

David H. Volman, professor emeritus, chemistry, was born in 1916 in Los Angeles California. He received his BS and MS degrees in chemistry from UCLA in 1937 and 1938 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1940. In 1940 he joined UC Davis as an instructor and junior chemist but left during World War II to work as research chemist for the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development. George Simms Hammond was an American scientist and theoretical chemist who developed "Hammond's postulate", and fathered organic photochemistry - the general theory of the geometric structure of the transition state in an organic chemical reaction.

Spin-Statistical Factors in Diffusion - Controlled Reactions; Photochemistry and Molecular Motion in Solid Amorphous Polymers; Photochemistry of Simple Olefins - Chemistry of Electronic Excited States or Hot Ground States?; The Decomposition of Alkyl Nitrites and the Reactions of Alkoxyl Radicals; Photochemistry in Surfactant Solutions.
