This manual focuses on one aspect of calculations in thermal analysis.
In the modern world of ever-advancing technologies, actual tests of products and processes are more and more often preceded, if not replaced, by computer modeling. This saves the time and resources required for actual tests, and enables a better understanding of processes that occur in the course of tests. Preliminary computer modeling favors prudent planning of experiments. Calculations in thermal analysis are used everywhere, for example, in estimating the efficiency of thermal insulation of pipelines and in estimating the critical overheating conditions for some chemical substances under which their decomposition, self-heating, explosion, and so forth, occurs. This methodical manual focuses on a small aspect of calculations in thermal analysis dealing with constructing kinetic models from thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry experimental data.

Igor V. Arhangel`skii is Associate Professor and Honored Researcher at Chemistry Faculty at Moscow State University, ex-vice dean of the Department of Materials Science, Moscow State University. He was a head of the Thermal Analysis Laboratory at the Institute of New Carbon Materials and Technology. His studies deal with the thermo-mechanical properties of polymers, carbon-polymer composites, phosphates, coating materials and materials for fuel cells. One of his main areas of research is devoted to thermal simulations and kinetic analysis. Andrey V. Tarasov is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Fritz-Haber Institute of the Max-Planck Society in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry. His research focuses on developing thermo-analytical techniques for studying inorganic catalysts, thermal characterization of materials and kinetic analysis. Nikolay. A. Tikhonov is a researcher at the Moscow State University, Department of Chemistry. His main field of interest is the thermal analysis of inorganic materials. Irina V. Makarenko is Assistant Professor for Physics at Moscow State University, Faculty of Physics, Researcher at Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, MSU, Researcher at the Faculty of Chemistry, MSU. Her research focuses on thermal analysis and materials for aerospace applications. Alexander V. Dunaev works at the Moscow State University, Faculty of Chemistry. He is a head of the Thermal Analysis Laboratory at the Institute of New Carbon Materials and Technology. His main field of interest is the thermal analysis of carbon materials.
