Ultrasonic irradiation and the associated sonochemical and sonophysical effects are complementary techniques for driving more efficient chemical reactions and yields. Sonochemistry—the chemical effects and applications of ultrasonic waves—and sustainable (green) chemistry both aim to use less hazardous chemicals and solvents, reduce energy consumption, and increase product selectivity.

A comprehensive collection of knowledge, Handbook on Applications of Ultrasound covers the most relevant aspects linked to and linking green chemistry practices to environmental sustainability through the uses and applications of ultrasound-mediated and ultrasound-assisted biological, biochemical, chemical, and physical processes.

Chapters are presented in the areas of:

Medical applications
Drug and gene delivery
Nanotechnology
Food technology
Synthetic applications and organic chemistry
Anaerobic digestion
Environmental contaminants degradation
Polymer chemistry
Industrial syntheses and processes
Reactor design
Electrochemical systems
Combined ultrasound−microwave technologies

While the concepts of sonochemistry have been known for more than 80 years, in-depth understanding of this phenomenon continues to evolve. Through a review of the current status of chemical and physical science and engineering in developing more environmentally friendly and less toxic synthetic processes, this book highlights many existing applications and the enormous potential of ultrasound technology to upgrade present industrial, agricultural, and environmental processes.

Dr. Dong Chen has been doing fundamental research in sonochemistry, environmental chemistry, and water and wastewater treatment technologies. States. He serves as a principal and coprincipal investigator of several funded scientific research projects. Before this position, he worked as a visiting assistant professor at Lamar University, Texas. Even earlier, Dr. Chen was an instructor and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of New Mexico and worked on a couple of research projects sponsored by national laboratories. He received his PhD in civil (environmental) engineering with a minor in geological science from The Ohio State University, Columbus, in 2005. In addition, he received his master’s and bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from Nanyang Technological University and Tongji University, respectively. Besides his research experience, Dr. Chen had been working as a full-time engineering consultant for more than two years. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Ohio. An internationally acclaimed, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) Prof. Sanjay K. Sharma, FRSC is a Ph.D. (1999) in Organic Chemistry from Rajasthan University, Jaipur, India and is a renowned author and editor of many books, research journals, and hundreds of articles from last twenty years. He has authored over 100 Research papers including many comprehensive Review articles in high-impact journals of international repute and contributed 21 Books from the internationally acclaimed publication houses so far. For his contribution in the area of Green Chemistry and Environmental Sustainability, he has also been included in the "World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists" for last two consecutive years (i.e. 2020 and 2021) published by Stanford University, USA. Presently Prof. Sharma is working as Professor of Chemistry and Dean (Research) at JECRC University, Jaipur, India. Ackmez Mudhoo obtained his BEng (Hons) in chemical and environmental engineering from the University of Mauritius in 2004. He then received his MPhil from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Mauritius, in 2007. His research interests encompass the bioremediation of solid wastes and wastewaters by composting, anaerobic digestion, phytoremediation, and biosorption. Aside from research, has professional experience as consultant chemical process engineer for China International Water & Electric Corp. (CWE, Mauritius) from February 2006 to March 2008. He is also the coeditor of Green Chemistry for Environmental Sustainability. He is presently a lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Mauritius.
