Since the first reported linking of an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) ion source with a mass spectrometer (MS) in 1983, the instrumentation and analytical techniques have been developed to a point where the technology can deliver detection limits of one part in 10^15. With this level of detection, ICP-MS is an invaluable tool in a huge range of applications.
